Inspiring its members and enriching the fiber culture in the five valleys of Western Montana
In Memoriam
Margie “Marghee” Nagle (May 11, 1941 – January 15, 2023)
Marghee, as she liked to be called, was a special Woman. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting her children or the children she cared for as a Nanny from birth until adulthood they would tell you she was kind, loving and fun.
I met her the first week she moved to Missoula from Kalispell when she came to my booth at the Saturday market and asked about my sheep. I shared my contact info and that started a great friendship. The very next week she came to our farm and I shared the Big Sky Fiber Arts Guild info. She was off and running, became involved, joined the spinning group. She brought the children to the farm on several occasions and had a great time with my husband, Will. Always fun and willing to go on an adventure with a smile and a quick sense of humor, generating many laughs. If you were in need of help or a hug she was there. I miss her. Sharon H
Summarizing our lovely “Marghee” in just a few short lines is a tough order! When she joined the BSFAG, we had no idea what a treat we were in for! Her quick wit and hilarious stories of her youthful escapades kept us in uproarious tears (taking a beer truck for little joyride!! Coming back to life as a Harley B****!). Having raised sheep, she enjoyed spinning, but knitting or crocheting was a frustration, so she bartered and traded with friends and neighbors for other items and gifts to give. She was always up for an adventure and particularly FIBER adventures, especially if it was still on the hoof! A yak farm, alpaca ranches, cashmere goats, sheep shearing and fiber festivals! And if there was a brewery stop included, that was all the better!
Marghee also had a heart of gold. She was always volunteering to help; lending a hand with vendor set-up with some of our guild members, or helping friends pack for a move, or simply giving a small trinket she found to make someone smile.
Marghee is survived by many Guild members who miss her terribly. Cheers to a lovely lady. (a Blue Moon brew, of course!) Respectfully, Laura M
Long time guild member Carol Wilbur loved color! She loved texture! And though she was a knitter and a spinner, her true passion was weaving. After retiring from teaching English at Hellgate High School in Missoula, Carol devoted much of her time to weaving (and her grandchildren!!). Just like all of us, Carol had accumulated quite a yarn and fiber stash, but sadly, cancer took her away from her stash before she could transform her visions into extraordinary weavings and knitted items for her grandbabies and loved ones. Carol’s husband, Phil was so thoughtful to share her stash with us so that we, her fiber sisters, can turn her colorful yarns and fibers into our own extraordinary creations. Just think, each skein was chosen by Carol for it’s unique quality, now it’s been chosen again by each of us!
Thank you Carol, for your exquisite taste in yarn! Your memory will be worked into each colorful stitch.
Alta Gibson passed away on November 3, 2017 at the age of 96 and is survived by her daughter Arla. Alta was an accomplished spinner and knitter who helped with many aspects of the Big Sky Fiber Festival in years past. Newer members may not remember Alta as it became difficult for her to attend meetings in recent years. Those of us who knew her will miss her lovely smiling pixie face and cheerful presence. Some of her interesting stories include having missed Pearl Harbor by a day and knowing Igor Sikorsky, the inventor of the Sikorsky helicopter. She also loved riding motorcycles. A grand lady who will be missed.
